How this image compressor works
Drop in up to 20 images and choose one of two approaches. By quality re-encodes each photo at the level you set; most photos survive 70–80% with no visible change, because cameras save far more detail than screens can show. Exact size is for upload limits: enter a number in KB and the tool searches for the highest quality that fits under it, scaling dimensions down only as a last resort.
The compression itself happens in your browser. There is no upload step, which is why a 5 MB photo finishes in a second or two — the only thing that limits speed is your own device, not a server queue. It also means the tool works on sensitive material — ID scans, medical images, contract photos — without those files ever existing anywhere but your machine.
When to compress an image
- An upload form rejects your photo for being too large.
- Email attachments bounce or send slowly.
- A website you run feels slow — image weight is the usual culprit.
- Cloud storage or a phone backup is filling up with multi-MB photos.
Getting the best results
Start at 75% quality and look at the result before going lower — the preview numbers update on every run, so experimenting is free. Photographs tolerate compression well; sharp-edged graphics, text screenshots and logos show artifacts sooner, so keep those at 85% or above, or leave them as PNG. And compress from the original file when you can: re-compressing an already-compressed JPG stacks the losses from both passes.
If you have a hard ceiling to hit — 50 KB for a government form, 100 KB for a marketplace listing — the dedicated exact-size pages preset everything: just drop the file and download.
Frequently asked questions
- What's the difference between the quality dial and exact size?
- The quality dial re-encodes the image at the level you choose — 75% is a good default for photos. Exact size works backwards from a number: tell it 100 KB and it finds the highest quality that fits under that ceiling.
- Can I compress several images at once?
- Yes, up to 20 at a time. Each one is processed with the same settings, and you can download them individually or as a single ZIP.
- Does compressing change the image dimensions?
- Quality mode keeps the original width and height. Exact-size mode also keeps them when possible, and only scales the image down if the target can't be reached any other way.
- Why did my PNG barely shrink?
- PNG is lossless, so there's no quality dial to turn. For screenshots and photos saved as PNG, converting to JPG or WebP usually cuts the size by far more — try the PNG to JPG tool.
- Is it safe for private photos and documents?
- The image is processed by your own browser on your own device. It is never uploaded, so there is nothing on a server to leak, cache or delete.
